4 Ways Corporate Refugees Can Become Their Own Bosses

4 Ways Corporate Refugees Can Become Their Own Bosses4 Ways Corporate Refugees Can Become Their Own BossesInterested in a progressive career change? Create success on your own terms with these methods. The U.S. Labor Department revealed that the unemployment rate fell in every state in 2015 for the first time in 30 years. The improving economy is making life for the job seeker a bit easier, but returning to the daily grind of a corporate 9 to 5 isnt necessarily the right career move for every professional. For many highly-qualified individuals who have been downsized from their previous place of employment, the recovering economy may be the perfect opportunity to begin again as a small geschftlicher umgang owner. If you are a corporate refugee and want to explore the option of being your own boss, here are four viable ways to start your career as a small geschftlicher umgang owner.1. Become a ConsultantConsultants serve as hired guns that bring a fresh set of eyes to a geschftsleben and help them solve problems. This profession offers specialists, technical experts and executives ways to leverage their professional networks and utilize their industry experience for practical and lucrative purposes. As the economy is in the process of recovery, businesses are currently seeking restructuring advice from consultants. The U.S. market for management consulting grew $39.3 billion last year according to a report from Source Information Services. The industry is expected to further grow at an annual rate of 5.2 percent. Some great perks consultants have include the power to choose who they want to work with and freedom to set their own rates for their services. However, the greatest feature of this profession is the low barrier for entry perfect for anyone who doesnt want to be confined to a standard 40-hour business week.If you enjoy traveling and do not mind a competitive work environment, consultancy may be your next career step. One downside to remember is that consulta nts often have to spend more time finding clients than they do helping them.2. Launch your own business For people who want the freedom to make their own decisions, design their own business model, and enjoy a flexible schedule, starting a small business may be your best bet. However, there are a lot of risks responsibilities to bear on your own. Starting a business involves a lot of research and analysis to get your business plan and marketing strategy right. Plus, you have SH3 a team to establish, technologies to learn and apply, and customers to win over. Some people may be inspired by that challenge, but many professionals who are used to being an employee may find the complete accountability a bit daunting.3. Buy an existing businessWhen purchasing an established business, everything is already in place. You have a proven idea, established methods of conducting business and existing employees and customers. This route has considerably less startup headaches, and if the business already has positive overhead, you can forgo the period of not making profit for the first few years that small business owners typically encounter. If youre thinking about buying a business, be prepared for the purchase costs to be much higher than launching the same kind of business on your own. There also may be hidden problems associated with the business, such as debts to service or uncollectible receivables, unaccounted for equipment or facility renovation costs and the risk of losing key employees, vendors or customers with a change in management.4. Open a Franchise Think of franchising as a cross between starting your own business and buying an existing one. With a franchise, you get to be your own boss and have a proven business model to work with, but youll still have to abide by the principles and guidelines of the corporation. Franchises benefit from brand awareness, operational support, marketing, established clientele and so on. As McDonalds founder Ray Kroc described f ranchising, its being in business for yourself, but not by yourself. While franchises have a higher cost of entry than starting a business from scratch, they have a significantly higher success rate compared to independent businesses. You will have to pay a franchise fee and ongoing royalties in exchange for the corporations proven model of success. If reducing your financial risk or scaling a business are important considerations in owning a business, then heading a franchise might be the perfect role for you.***No matter which path you take to small business ownership, be sure to select an entrepreneurial venture that allows you to leverage your strengths and spend the majority of your time on activities you enjoy. Before going into business, confirm that you have enough capital and financing capability to both launch the business and keep your household going before the venture generates a positive cash flow. And of course, be sure that the investment of your time, skills and mone y pays off not only financially, but also when it comes to your work/life balance.

Why it Matters to be the Cool Kid at Work Why it Matters to be the Cool Kid at Work The definition of popularity used within the study was a person who is accepted by ones peers and has been conceptualized as a function of the personality of an employee and the position of that employee within his or her group. Studies of co-workers have also found that they feel popularity is associated with favorable treatment thanks to the rewarding nature of interacting with popular employees. Popular employees are also thought to impact the status of co-workers through association and facilitate cooperation. Many tips for becoming more popular are relatively painless to implement and can equate in immediate social benefits within the office Take some time to learn about the priorities of co-workers, both personal and professional, and show genuine interest in learning about those things. Most people love to talk, especially about themselves, and the more they share with you the happier he or sh e will be to be in your company. Keep your conversations focused on the other person. By shifting the attention away from yourself and your experiences, you make the other person feel important and interesting. Seek to admire, not to be admired. One of the primary traits that is related to popularity is self-confidence. Displaying confidence fosters trust from others and allows other to feel less nervous when talking to you. Though you may be nervous internally, try to portray a natural and relaxed demeanor by avoiding thoughts of how you are being perceived by others. 4 ways to shrink your wage gap

4 ways to shrink your wage eu-agrarpolitik4 ways to shrink your wage gapWhat to do if you think youre paid less than your male colleague?Realizing youre paid less than your male peer can be a hard blow. It saps your confidence. It can strain your relationships not to mention crush your productivity and morale. Recently I had the chance to weigh in on this critical issue with Juliana Reyes ofthe Philadelphia Inquirer, in a piece where 6 brave women shared their pay inequity stories. I offered tips on how to combat the wage gap, which are summarized below.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreKnow the going rateIf you squirm at the thought of asking your colleagues exactly how much theyre making, then pivot your request slightly. Try asking how much theyre hoping to land in terms of a percentage of their raise or how much they made when they first started at the job. You can also ask t he range they hope to fall within at review time. It helps if you have evidence to share, such as the latest salary report for your industry. Remember Employers cant legally tell you not to discuss salary. While youre at it, check out industry data from trade associations, industry competitors, and websitessuch asGlassdoorandPayscale. If a headhunter calls you with an opportunity (even if youre not interested), always talk to the person, as its a great way to see what employers are offering for someone *like you* right now.Prep before you makeyouraskSchedule a meeting with your manager just as you would for an important project. Come in prepared and ready to make an objective case for yourself. Data is important here. But so is framing. Dont open with talk about the wage gap or what your male colleague Mark is making. (If you do, it could encourage your manager to begin telling you all the reasons Mark is wonderful or exceptional). Instead, focus on yourself. Have a list of your acco mplishments at the ready. But make sure to give yourself time to prep. Even if youre rightfully enraged about being underpaid, a drive-by negotiation rarely ends up getting anyone the results they want.Figure out a plan in case you get a noIf you get pushback, dont slink away defeated. Engage your babo and elongate the conversation. One woman executive I talked to described getting a no, and then asking what, exactly, her boss needed that he wasnt getting in terms of her skills. Pushing for that specific information, and then working on it, landed her a major promotion and pay raise not long thereafter. Another way to frame this is, What are the conditions that need to be true for me to move up/increase my pay?Analyze your wage gap with a lawyerIf you feel youre being discriminated against, dont be shy about talking to an employment lawyer. Do your own research and study theEqual Employment Opportunity Commissionswebsite(itsthe agency that enforces the Equal Pay Act). Familiarize yo urself with the Commissions rules For example, if you want to allegediscrimination, you have to compare yourself to another role thatsconsidered substantially equal. Know that if you formally file a complaint, your name will be attached to it. Its important to first read about others who have fought a wage gap and been through the process so that you can make an informed decision.Thankfully, not all companies are turning a blind-eye to pay inequity. In fact earlier this monthI wrote in Forbesabout six innovative ways companies are attempting to flatten the wage gap. Check it out and chime in with your ideas belowThis article first appeared on Be Leaderly.

Common Forms of Online and Digital Advertising

Common Forms of Online and Digital AdvertisingCommon Forms of Online and Digital AdvertisingTwenty years ago, digital advertising was just a bunch of banners placed prominently on websites. They were annoying, you clicked on one in every 100, and they became the victims of banner blindness. Today, digital advertising is vast, with many different types of erreichbar ads being produced based on target audience, website content, and call to action. But before diving into the costs, and varying forms, lets take a look at the basic definition of digital advertising (aka online advertising). Basic Definition If you see an advertisement on the internet, then it is classified as digital advertising. In fact, there are ads on this very page, and most other websites you visit, as they are the primary revenue driver for internet companies. From banner ads (including rich media banners) to Search Engine Optimization (SEO), social networking, email marketing, online classified ads, site takeo vers, and even SPAM, online advertising is one of the fastest growing ways to reach an audience. With the web now readily available on smartphones, digital advertising has spread to the mobile platform. Companies are spending millions of dollars trying to find a way to advertise on phones without creating an unpleasant or disruptive experience. So far, the most popular way to do so has been through native advertising methods (read mora on that here). Costs Associated With Digital Advertising There are hundreds of different advertising models online, but most umstand under one of the following three categories. Without a doubt, every ad you have seen online today was paid for by one of these methods CPA (Cost Per Action) In this model, all the risk falls on the publisher of the ad. The advertiser only pays the publisher if someone clicks AND completes a transaction.PPC (Pay Per Click) The most common form of online advertising as it behooves both parties. The advertiser pays when someone clicks on the ad, but they do not have to complete a purchase for the publisher to get paid. Under this model, target keywords are highly important.CPM (Cost Per Mille) More commonly known as CPT (Cost Per Thousand), the advertiser pays for exposure based on visitors to the website and eyes on an ad. If a website gets two million visitors per day, and the ad is seen on 50% of those pages, then a CPM of $2 would be equal to $2000. Types of Digital Advertising To list them all would take forever, but here are some of the main ways that advertisers are getting to consumers with an online buy Banners ads (These include skyscrapers, full banners, squares, and buttons.)Adsense (These are the ads served to consumers via Google, by showing ads relevant to the information on any page.)Email advertising (and SPAM)Native Advertising(This continues to grow and dominate the online advertising space.)Facebook AdsYouTube AdsSponsored TweetsWebsite TakeoversRich Media AdsPop Up Ads(an d pop-unders)Pre-video adsBlogging Tips for Success in Digital Advertising Digital advertising is no longer a joke. Banner ads used to be laughed at, and emails were considered pointless and annoying. But now, with everyone absorbed in a smartphone or digital device, the advertising has to be done here. And that means it needs to be done well because it is saturated. Here are some tips to ensure your ad campaign gets a good ROI. Make your campaigns shareable Whatever you do, think about the impact it will have on the people who see it. Will they love it so much that they hit the share button and spread the word for you? Will they want their friends and relatives to see it? Will it go viral? A good digital campaign needs shareability to provide an impressive ROI. Without sharing, youre working too hard to get the clicks and conversions.Do not think inside a digital box A digital campaign is exactly that a campaign that lives in the digital world. BUT, it does not have to be all d igital. You can generate videos or film stunts and then put them online. You can have campaigns that utilize outdoor, guerrilla, and phone. As long as the campaign is tied together with digital, it can be created in any number of ways. Analytics is key You need to monitor your digital campaigns closely and be ready to act upon that information and course-correct at a moments notice. If some parts of your target audience are simply not responding, channel your campaign money into areas that are doing well. If you see negative reactions and clicks decrease, make sure you have a plan ready to go. The Problems With Spam You, no doubt, know the termand are even more familiar with the actual product. Spam is derived from a classic Monty Python sketch in which everything on the menu in a small cafe consisted of Spam. This bombardment with Spam became synonymous with the way unsolicited emails bombard the inboxes of consumers. When email marketing was relatively new, Spam was rife. Howe ver, anti-spamming laws have cut down a lot of this traffic, with fines and other punishments being dished out to the guilty parties. It hasnt stopped it entirely, though, with Spammers becoming more sophisticated, and also finding ways past anti-spam filters. This is the junk mail of the digital world. Another form of SPAM is phishing, which includes the vicious 419 fraud. However, this goes beyond the realms of advertising and into something that is both highly illegal and potentially life-destroying. Give Customers an Easy Path To Unsubscribe While on the subject of SPAM, do everything you can to make it easy for your customers to quickly unsubscribe from your email list. While it may seem counter-intuitive, you do not want to create a negative experience. Making it easy to opt out will leave the customer with a positive impression of you. They may well continue to buy from you, even though they dont get your emails. On the other hand, if you put the unsubscribe button in 6pt type in the middle of a bunch of legal copy, and make them jump through hoops to leave the list, you will lose that customer for good.

Four Tips for Becoming a Trailblazer at Your First Job

Four Tips for Becoming a Trailblazer at Your First Job For four (maybe five okay, six?) years, youve dreamed of walking across the stage at graduation, mom and dad snapping pictures, a diploma fresh in hand that tiny piece of paper telling the world youve been stamped for approval by the Academy. And now youve done it. Youre off the stage and onto the next step of adulthood. Within a few months, youll (hopefully) start your first job. Nervous though you may be, youre likely determined to do well. But, we get it. Youre new the real world. Youre not entirely sure how to do well. Youve never had a career. No fear Bill Peppler, managing partner at IT and tech staffing agencyKavaliro, has kindly offered his advice on how you can have an impact on your new organization and make your mark from day one.1. departure During the Interview ProcessIf you want to be a trailblazer that is, the kind of new employee who dives headfirst into things and keeps their eye on success at all times youfirst have to find a job that is the right fit for both you and youremployer. If youre introverted and the job requires extensive people-to-people interaction and high energy, youre not setting yourself up to do your best work.During the application and interview process, you have to pay attention to your prospective employers culture and think about whether or not its the right place for you. Some companies may be so set in their ways or so structured and regimented in the way they do business that there wont bethe chance for someone to even be atrailblazer, Peppler says. Its important to be honest about who you are as a partie and be receptive to the ethos of the company, if you want to find the best match.2. Know Whats Expected of You Before Day OneIn order to hit the ground running, you have to know whats expected of you and you need a clear sense of what you expect from the company. We ask that you share whats expected on our end, Peppler says. How d o we keep up expectation on things like pay structure and benefits when potential reviews might be done during the year.In other words You cant meet expectations if you dont know what they are. Your performance will reflect that andthats not great news if youre trying to become a trailblazer.3. Exceed ExpectationsAfter youve been in the job for a while and have learned how to meet theminimum expectations set forth by the company, you have to then ask what can be done to surpass those expectations.According to Peppler, a trailblazer understands the role, understands what the goals may be, and understands how to supersede those goals. Its that bit about superseding that really matters here. Trailblazers go above and beyond whenever they can.4. CommunicationAs with any job, communication is paramount. This cant be stressed enough A trailblazer establishes a clear avenue of communication from the very beginning. If there is something you see, whats your solution for it?Peppler says. The assumption is that youll establish a line of communication, and anytime you have an idea, a fresh perspective, or an issue, you wont shy away from bringing it to the table.Ultimately, a trailblazer will do all of these things without being told. And you probably wont have an endless supply of reminders once you enter the workforce. So, consider this your guidebook. Pocket it. Stow it away for later. Relish the fact that you dont really have to do homework anymore youre a graduateBut, when it comes time for the dream interview or your first day of work, give this article another look. Now follow those tips and soon, youll be the kind of trailblazer that others are following.

Challenges of HR Technology and the Hiring Function

Challenges of HR Technology and the Hiring FunctionChallenges of HR Technology and the Hiring FunctionHiring and engaging high potential employees has never been more challenging for organizations, yet it is one of the most critical components of a competitive geschftliches miteinander strategy. Staying competitive and growing in the midst of business, social and technology turmoil presents Human Resources departments with a broad sortiment of challenges to accomplish even the most tactical activities. Doing whats required and contributing to the overall business strategy within a resource-constrained climate is an issue that most HR professionals know all too well. Meeting those challenges and actively contributing to the business success requires focus, planning, and technology that aligns and supports the HR strategy. Todays workforce has different expectations about the way they want to work and the tools they want to use to accomplish their work. Building collaborative processes and using technology that enables information flow can create an experience that leads to a more engaged workforce. But, creating positive and engaging employee experiences is directly linked to HRs technology choices. Meeting the Challenge of HR Technology HR organizations are experienced users of technology. That technology, though, has evolved and changed quite a bit over the past decade. HR technology, or a tischset of products (or services) that automate HR processes, are often referred to as a suite. You can use the term suite in a few ways that vary from single-sourced products that are integrated with other products by the same company to groups of products from multiple vendors that are used together to automate a functional business area. So today, suite might mean a set of pre-integrated products provided by a single vendor, or it might also refer to a group of software services that enable the functions required to operate an HR organization regardless of origin or vendor. The reasons for using an HR software suite have also evolved quite a bit, but the basics are still important today. Its important that the solution automates as many tasks as possible, provides a reduced error rate, supports deep data analysis, andoffers self-service options to employees. Automation and better process optimization allow HR to become more strategic and focus on their more important tasks like talent recruiting, management, retention, and employee experience. Core Processes and Interoperable Systems Finding a solution that can enable positive employee experiences and facilitate strategic HR goals while automating daily tactical operations is a tall order. An overwhelming number of choices exist for technology systems and providers, but employers should make strategic alignment a key selection criterion. The HR organization must align with the business strategy and choose a supportive system. When evaluating HR suites, HR managers should ask questions such as these to ensure the solution meets the needs of their business. Key questions include Can the system automate all core HR processes, facilitate a modern way of working including embedded collaboration inside all processes, and execute those tactical operations in an acceptable manner? In short, does the system meet core HR business requirements?Does the HR suite optimize critical functions and contribute to the companys business goals? These critical functions must include modern ways to find and attract talented employees, develop employees skills and provide contingencies for managing talent gaps. Does the HR suite provide a way to create end-to-end HR processes and full data integration that provides a single data model? Businesses need to aggregate and access a complete data picture, no matter which function is involved. This is essential for the HR organization that is trying to execute end-to-end HR processes while maximizing the positive employee experience. Talent, Strat egic Direction, and Change HR has moved beyond the old personnel department paradigm and is in a position to add significant strategic value to your business. The change is tied to the move to information-driven businesses, which has elevated the value of talent and the realization that its a critical resource. The technology choices an organization makes must automate and enable the core functions of HR, but also support the strategic mission of HR today in organizations. Its a tough challenge, but the right suite of products will enable the accomplishment of allthree business needs.

12 Ways to Get Noticed for a Promotion at Work - The Muse

12 Ways to Get Noticed for a Promotion at Work - The Muse12 Ways to Get Noticed for a Promotion at WorkYouve been in the same role for years, waiting to earn that versetzung youve always wanted. And not just for a better title and a bigger paycheck, but for the feeling of knowing your work is valued and your company admires what you bring to the table. However, youre not going to earn a promotion by simply sitting and waiting- youll earn it by going above and beyond in your everyday tasks. Thats why we asked 12 successful entrepreneurs from YEC to share the one trait employees should have to guarantee them a promotion later on down the road. 1. You Step Outside Your DepartmentPeople can often get stuck in their niche, team, or role. When I binnensee someone step outside of his department and apply skills to support other teams- not to mention go out of his way to learn what others day-to-day work and challenges are- it tells me that hes willing to own his responsibilities while givin g to others. He sees the bigger mission of the company. - Shane Snow, Contently2. You Devise Simpler SolutionsIf one of my employees can devise a solution thats simpler than what we already use, I immediately take notice. When an employee thinks outside the kasten to such an extent that she individually modifies a companys processes, shes worthy of a promotion in my eyes. - Russell Kommer, eSoftware Associates Inc3. You Take OwnershipWhen you stop thinking in terms of your job description and start thinking in terms of helping the company, thats when youll truly shine. Especially with startups, managers dont always have the time and resources to tell you what to do next. By thinking like an entrepreneur, youll always stay ahead of the curve, and itll make everyones lives easier. - Elle Kaplan, LexION Capital4. You Always Go One Step FurtherGo one step further by performing tasks your manager never asked for. Im most impressed by employees who take the initiative to research, lear n, and propose new ideas or solutions to existing challenges. Since theyre the ones performing specific tasks, theyre most suited to suggest changes in processes or workflows. - Marcela De Vivo, Brilliance5. You tischset Goals and Hit ThemToo often, people communicate goals and dont hit them. Even in a relatively informal setting, if you vocalize that youll get something done by a certain date, execute on it and let people know about it (without bragging). This is a simple way to build a track record of dependability, and it makes you stand out from the majority. - Douglas Hutchings, Picasolar6. Youre CuriousHaving a positive attitude and being able to ask why are two attributes that all high-potential employees should have. Curiosity indicates a vested interest in the underlying why that drives what were doing, while a positive attitude makes you a pleasant person to be around. - Brian David Crane, Caller Smart Inc.7. You Search for Opportunities to Generate RevenueEmployees who advance the fastest are the ones who find new ways to upsell, cross-sell, or straight out sell. That goes for employees who arent even in sales. It tells your employer that youre looking out for the company and the companys future. And, its easy for an employer to give you a raise if youve justified it with revenue. - Dan Golden, Be Found Online8. You Create ValueTake initiatives beyond your job description and create interdepartmental or cross-disciplinary collaborative teams to create value for the company. Showing interest in creating new products, features, or improvements will surely be noticed by your employer. Send emails and meeting invites to other departments, engage in conversations, and make white papers to showcase your ideas for improving the product. - Nemoy Rau, US Biometrix9. Youre PunctualIf youre on time to work and stay until the end of the day every day, I take notice. It shows that you care about the company and are putting in the effort. With such a great w ork ethic, you increase the likelihood of earning a promotion. - Leila Lewis, Be Inspired PR10. You Excel in Multiple RolesAny good employee can excel in their role however, only great employees will excel in multiple roles. When I see an employee step out of his comfort zone and succeed in a project or role that isnt part of his duties, Ill definitely consider him for a promotion when its time for his review. - Anthony Pezzotti, Knowzo.com11. You Show a Serious Interest in Long-Term GrowthI know its not likely Ill find an employee who cares about my company as much as I do, but I always take notice when someone works toward the long-term health of the company. Some people dont go above and beyond in their jobs, or for others, its just something they do for the paycheck. If you care about the company as a whole, then youre worth keeping around, and promotions are a good incentive. - Adam Steele, Loganix12. You Generate IdeasBy sharing ideas that save or make money for the company , you illustrate that you deserve more responsibility and a higher income. Your ability and willingness to develop solutions that grow the company mean youre very valuable. - Abhilash Patel, Recovery BrandsPhoto of two men working courtesy of Caiaimage/Trevor Adeline/Getty Images.

Certainly.A post on workflow automation platformOneSpace, says its helpful to make a checklist when working on many projects at the same timeIf youve taken on multiple large projects at once, the amount of work ahead of you can paralyze your ability to get started. To make things more manageable, organize your tasks into checklists. First, create a master checklist of all the tasks you must complete to finish your assigned projects. Organize these tasks by due date, and when a new task arises, add it to the list in the appropriate spot. Each workday, create a smaller checklist that outlines the tasks you must complete that day, listed in buchen of priority. When you complete a task, be sure to cross it off both checklists.Give yourself the time you needA Harvard Business Review article about working for more than one team discusses the authors research, and details how to minimi ze distractionsWhen youre focused on a high-priority task, buy yourself a mental escape from unnecessary intrusions. For example, when Im writing - my highest-concentration task - I put an automatic reply on my email telling people Im notlage checking messages till a certain time of day, and offering my mobile number in case of an emergency. By telling people not to expect an instant reply, you buy yourself some time to focus, while reassuring them that you will pay attention - later.Work in reverseAlan Henry, former Editor-in-Chief of Lifehacker (and now at The New York Times), writes in Lifehacker that you should work backwards from your deadlines when you need to prioritize when everything you have going on is crucial. He draws on his experience being a project managerTime is usually the one variable most of us cant change. Deadlines are deadlines, and often were not the ones who set them. This is where working backwards from due dates is crucial. Start a spreadsheet, and mark down when each project or task on your plate needs to be finished. Then work backwards to the present day, taking into account everything each specific to-do that needs to be done to get from here to there, and how long it takes to complete. When youre finished, youll likely see a bunch of tasks that should have started already and others that hopefully wont start for a while if youre going to make the deadline.
